🕊️ We Are All Just Crumbs in the Forest
A 20-Year Journey from Treasurer to Tree-Planter

I. The Beginning (2003)
In 2003, Cynthia Clottey founded SageHospital e.V. in Warang, Senegal.
Not as a savior.
Not as the one with the solution.
But as what she called: "a partner for collaborative problem-solving."
Her mother had shown her the way: Never choose the easy path. Always choose the new challenge. Always work with people, not for them.
Together with a pediatrician, her friend Katharina, the Sage Club in Berlin ("Feiern hilft!" - Celebrating Helps!), and the village community in Warang, she planted something.
Not a project.
A forest.
Since 2003, the clinic has treated 700+ patients per month for a symbolic fee of 80 cents – or free for those who can't pay. The structure was designed for self-sustainability from day one, not dependency.
II. My Role (2015-2018, and now)
For three years (2015-2018), I served as second chairman (zweiter Vorsitzender) of SageHospital e.V.
It's in the public record: VR 23541 B, Amtsgericht Charlottenburg.
- Entry #3 (16.01.2015): Branko May becomes zweiter Vorsitzender
- Entry #4 (19.11.2018): Branko May steps down
I thought it was essential.
I thought I was carrying something that couldn't be carried by others.
I thought I was #1.
I was wrong.
In 2018, I stepped down from the board.
Not because I stopped caring.
But because something needed to shift.
The forest doesn't need one person carrying everything.
Now, in 2024, Cynthia also stepped down after 21 years as chairwoman (Entry #5, 07.03.2024).
The new board – Jan Schröder, Christian Tobias Nieth, and Paco Ahmad (born in 2004, the year after SageHospital was founded!) – now carries what needs carrying.
The Freistellungsbescheid (non-profit tax status).
The legal responsibilities.
The structure.
The #FA (Finanzamt) documentation.
They carry it. Not me.
I'm still a member.
I still care deeply.
But I do what a crumb must do: #vektor
Not position. Not control.
Just: Direction. Movement. A small force pointing somewhere useful.
Paco understood what took me years to learn:
"Zu viel!" (Too much!)
Too much responsibility on one person breaks the dance.
The beautiful thing about Gemeinnützigkeit (non-profit status)?
Everyone can read it.
The transitions are public.
The letting-go is documented.
No secrets. No hidden power.
No one owns the forest.
III. The Pigeons (August 2025)
Last summer in Hamburg, I observed pigeons for two days.
Not with sensors and algorithms.
But with an open heart.
The experiment was simple:
Day 1: Three feeding stations
→ Chaos. Confusion. No flight. No dance.
Day 2: One feeding station
→ Order. The pigeons returned. They waited in lines. They circled. They danced.
The lesson was profound:
Pigeons don't follow commands.
They follow focus.
When there's a clear center, order emerges naturally.
When too many options exist, confusion takes over – not community.
I wrote about it. Posted it. Referenced RFC 1149 – the satirical (but actually implemented!) internet protocol for "IP over Avian Carriers."
"Every carefully carried byte becomes a seed."
I thought I understood.
But I didn't. Not yet.
IV. The Return (January 2026)
Now I'm back in Warang, Senegal.
Not as chairman.
Not as treasurer.
Not as #1.
Not even as "important contributor."
But as: Krümel. A crumb.
BRANKO stands on a wall here now.
32°C heat. 3€ spray cans. 4 hours of pure focus.
A freestyle piece painted with whatever materials were available.
Not perfect conditions.
But: A clear center. One wall. Maximum impact.
A small crumb of paint in the Sahel sun.
Maya-Eule will come to Sage Hospital.
An offline-first educational AI for children.
Text-only. USB-ready. Built for contexts where internet is luxury.
Designed with one clear center: Help children learn.
A small crumb of code in a Linux container.
Both: Gifts.
Not solutions.
Not "my contribution."
Not "me bringing salvation."
Just: Crumbs in the forest.
V. The Understanding (20 years later)
Here's what I finally understand:
There are no heroes.
There is no #1.
There is:
- Cynthia (crumb) – planted the seed
- The pediatrician (crumb) – brought medical knowledge
- Katharina (crumb) – co-founded with vision
- Sage Club Berlin (crumb) – "Feiern hilft!" for 17 years
- 700 patients per month (crumbs) – trust the forest
- Village community in Warang (crumbs) – partners, not recipients
- Jan, Christian, Paco (crumbs) – carry the structure now
- Me (crumb) – paint walls, write code, be #vektor
- You reading this (crumb) – part of the resonance
Together: The forest.
Together: Resonance.
Not because anyone is in charge.
But because there's a center – a shared focus where care creates shape.
Not in a straight line.
But in a spiral – returning, growing, breathing.
Not in one place.
But everywhere, somewhere – decentralized, organic, alive.
Not THE forest.
But a forest – one of many.
Maybe in Warang, Senegal.
Maybe in a Linux container.
Maybe in Hamburg under a bridge (HAMMERBROOKLYN).
Maybe in your heart.
#atmen – breathing.
The forest breathes.
New crumbs arrive (Paco, born in 2004!).
Old crumbs become soil (Cynthia, after 21 years).
Some crumbs become #vektor (me, now).
VI. The Dove (Now)
The dove I released didn't fly to an unknown destination.
She flew home.
Back to where it started.
But different now.
Because I understand:
We are all just crumbs in the forest.
And that's not small.
That's everything.
The forest doesn't need #1.
The forest needs: Resonance.
The forest doesn't need heroes.
The forest needs: Partners.
The forest doesn't need control.
The forest needs: Breathing.
∂W/∂t = 0
The value doesn't come from growth.
The value comes from being.
The forest breathes.
The crumbs dance.
The dove rests.

Epilogue: RFC 1149 in Practice
In 1990, someone wrote RFC 1149 – "A Standard for the Transmission of IP Datagrams on Avian Carriers."
A joke. Satirical. Pigeons carrying data packets.
But in 2001, it was actually implemented in Bergen, Norway.
9 packets sent. Only 3 arrived.
High delay. Low throughput.
But it worked.
That's what we're doing:
Not optimizing for speed.
Not scaling for billions.
Not disrupting markets.
But: Carrying carefully.
Every byte becomes a seed.
Every crumb becomes forest.
Every pigeon finds its way home.

20 years. Two continents. One lesson:
Create space, not solutions.
Be partners, not apparatus.
Be crumbs, not heroes.
Qui vivra verra. – Who lives will see.

Meta: Das was nie fertig wird
This document is never finished.
It breathes.
It grows.
It changes.
Like a forest.
Like crumbs becoming soil.
Like pigeons finding new patterns.
